Thisavroulis Mobile Game

The Game

Thisavroulis is a mobile treasure hunting game for children. I created the Interface design in the context of the student thesis of Antonis Koulalis which was developed under the supervision of Prof. Yannis Ioannidis, Professor in the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications at the University of Athens. This thesis describes the design and implementation of a treasure hunt game and the actualization of a way of creating such games adjusted to the interests of the target children.

Antonis' concept is based on one of the greatest problems grown-ups face in relation to young children. They lose interest quite easily. Every child has a personality of his/her own and it is therefore hard to find a single game that will excite every young player equally. Following this thinking approach the goal is to create the game according to the personality and the interests of the child to which it is targeted instead of creating games of a general interest. This is how customization is achieved.

Branding   I   UX/UI   I   App Design

To serve the needs of the game, one main character was created, Thisavroulis (Greek for small treasure boy) and his female version Thisavroula (Greek for small treasure girl). Thisavroulis guides the child every step of the way, encourages him to take on the next challenge, and praises him for the points earned. Recognition and praise give children sufficient encouragement to want to improve and keep trying, to achieve higher scores or reach higher levels.

Design

The game was created for a very specific audience, children aged 6-8 and the interface design was based on providing a feel-good environment, in which the child will feel free to create its own challenges and at the same time enjoy the experience. Choosing a playful and appealing color palette, using minimalistic graphics and writing clear verbal messages, my goal was to create an easy to navigate and natural to use app for both the child and the assisting adult. Another important goal was also to achieve flexibility, since the child is required to add texts and photos.

Avatars

The player can pick a profile picture among six variants of the main characters, Thisavroulis and Thisavroula in different colours.

The aim of this project is basically to combine technology which has become an integral part of our daily life, with more traditional ways of entertainment and learning in particular. It is true that the younger generations get an early brush with technology at an age when every stimulus they encounter is vital for their later development.
